When you're at the end of the road

I AM A BORN AGAIN GREEN DAY FAN! I loved this performance of 21 Guns performed by Green Day and the Broadway bound cast of American Idiot. It was so popular that the show and Green Day made hot topics list on Twitter.

"When you're at the end of the road"-lyrics from 21 Guns from American Idiot

Welcome to the 60s

DVD of the Month: Hairspray!!!The movie/musical is based on a 1988 film that turned into a 2002 Tony award winning Broadway musical. The story takes place in 1962 with change is in the air in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad a girl with big hair, big dreams, a big heart, and a deep passion to dance. She finds herself winning a spot on a local TV dance program called "The Corny Collins Show". The once outsider transformed overnight a local teen celebrity. Tracy does care about the new fame but rather like any teen wishes that she can win Link Larkin a teen heartthrob also on the show. She does all this while standing up for what she believes in, and staying true to who she is. The program's scheming stage manager Velma tries to stop Tracy at all costs.

Overall this film is a fun feel good movie that will make you want to jump up and dance. It always brings me a smile and leaves me with all the songs stuck in my head for days. It is a much watch for any musical lover. The soundtrack is a must buy as well. (shoutout to my friend Jose who worked on this lovely movie poster for the flim)

The cast includes:
  • Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad the optimistic, overweight teenage girl who loves to dance.
  • John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Tracy's mother and agent, she also is ashamed of her obesity.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Von Tussle, the manager of station WYZT, who's goal is to keep her daughter Amber in the spotlight on The Corny Collins Show.
  • Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy's father, who also runs his own store the"Hardy-Har Hut" joke shop.
  • Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Tracy's best friend. She is a sheltered girl; who falls in love with Seaweed.
  • James Marsden as Corny Collins, host of the Corny Collins show.
  • Queen Latifah as "Motormouth" Maybelle, a Baltimore Rhythm and Blues radio disc jockey who hosts "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show.
  • Brittany Snow as Amber Von Tussle, Velma's bratty daughter.
  • Zac Efron as Link Larkin, is a singer and dancer who gradually becomes more attracted to Tracy.
  • Elijah Kelley as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Maybelle's son, an expert dancer who teaches Tracy some dance moves and falls in love with her friend, Penny.
  • Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton, Penny's mother, a strict Catholic who keeps Penny from experiencing a social life.
  • "Welcome to the 60s"-song from Hairpray.

    The Light in the Piazza

Tonight I went to see Kelli O'Hara at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
She was amazing!!! When this woman comes out on stage she can blow out the windows the room with her voice. The night's theme was songs with lyrics that told the story of her journey up till now. She would sing a classic Rogers and Hammerstein piece and then knock it out of the park with a Stephen Sondheim number. I have always wished I got the opportunity to see her on Broadway in one of her most famous roles so I was so happy that she sang at least one from each of her roles. Also for having a baby just six months ago she looked wonderful!

On Broadway she stared as Clara Johnson in The Light in the Piazza with Matthew Morrison, as Babe Williams in the Roundabout Theatre Company"s revival of The Pajama Game, alongside Harry Connick, Jr. and recently as Nellie Forbush in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific (she left the show on the 3rd of this month). All three of theses performance earned her nomination for Tony Awards.

RIVERDANCE: Liked & Hated all at the same time?
So last night I went to the opening night performance of Riverdance at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. It was interesting to say the least. The dancers are amazingly talented and kept the crowd asking for more. I however was quite alright with the over two hour long show. One thing I did like about the show was how it brielfy touched on the blending of cultues through dance here in American and the simualrities between tap and Irish step dancing. The stand out performance was given by the Riverdance Baritone Soloist, Michael Samuels, that man can sing! The BAD: I could do with out all the instrumental solos, Irish singing, horrible LIGHTING that blinds you and the 90's plain/ bare SET DESIGN (eww) and flashy costumes but then it wouldn't be Riverdance. So in short Dancers AWESOME! Show itself sucked!
If you like Irish dance then go see the show. It runs till the 24th of this month. Click Here for more details.

    Big Picture

Ordinary Days: LOVED the music and lyrics by Adam Gwon, LIKED the performance. So I attended tonight's performance of Ordinary Days at the South Repertory Theatre. I fell in love with the story of a couple of ordinary days in the life four young New Yorkers trying to find the own life story. The story is fun, heart warming, upbeat, and yet encapsulates all the emotions of what it is to be a 20/30 some year old person in today's society.

I fell in love with the character of a graduate student named Deb played by Deborah S. Craig (best known for originating the role of Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Broadway.) Deb is a girl from the sub's and moved to New York to do something her life. She find herself unhappy and lost trying to find out what her Big Picture is. She is emotional, spastic, bold, unsure of herself, and seeking tranquility. Basically she reminds me of me (we even had the same hat on). The number in the show that I felt so connected was Big Picture; where Deb talks about how she knows what she wants but does not know how to get it. I completely understand that.
Deb develops an unlikely friendship with Warren played by Nick Gabriel. Warren is 20 something year old artist who works as a house/cat sitter to a not so famous artist. He knows he wants to make a differance and seeks to be noticed in a city on the go. He is very idealistic, and longs to have a fairytale adventure like in the movies. Gabriel and Craig did an amazing job at setting the tone of the show in the first two numbers.

The other storyline of the show is between Clarie and Jason. Clarie played by Nancy Anderson (known for her role of Lois/Bianca in Kiss me Kate on the West End) is a women lost in the past and unsure about her future with her boyfriend Jason played by David Burnham (known for his work in WIcked and in the Light in the Piazza). Jason is a man ready to settle down with Clarie and give her the world only if she would feel the same for him in return. Through Anderson and Burnham gave great performances of all the songs in the piece they did not work for me as a couple. It was hard for me to believe that Clarie was in love with Jason. They seemed like an unlikely match, even though they have some touching moments. On a side note was it just me or does Burnham look like he could be Cheyenne Jackson's brother? (its the smile)

One song did not work for me in the show Favorite Places. First of all why did Jason need to play the piano during the song? It was a distraction and smashed the 3rd wall making it more like a concert performance instead of a musical. Playing the piano had nothing to do with the song, the character or the show. Also the song was just a repeat of the same message that was in Jason's other big number Hundred-Story City. We get it he loves Claire and she is the only reason he stayed in New York.
Overall the show was a great little play that will leave you wanting to know what will happen next in these characters lives?
