This past Tuesday night I attended the opening night performance of Dreamgirls at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. The house was packed, not a single seat open. The audience was more than ecstatic about how much the enjoyed each number; often giving a standing ovation to most numbers. Dreamgirls cinderalle story of an up-and-coming 1960s girl group and their jourby through their success and tribulations of their new found fame. The original 1981 Broadway production won six Tony Awards. It was adapted into a motion picture by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures in 2006, staring Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx.
A new production of Dreamgirls is directed/choreographed by Robert Longbottom. Cast includes Moya Angela as Effie White, Syesha Mercado as Deena Jones, Adrienne Warren as Lorrell Robinson, and Margaret Hoffman as Michelle Morris, Chaz Lamar Shepherd as Curtis Taylor, Jr., Chester Gregory as James "Thunder" Early, Trevon Davis as C.C. White, Milton Craig Nealy as Marty Madison. I must say that the stand out performance came from Chester Gregory as James “Thunder” Early. Every time he came on stage the audience went wild! He stole every scene he was in.
