Lady peaceful, Lady happy

So, I saw Liza at the Hollywood this weekend and she was amazing. One of the best concert experiences I have ever had. She started off slow, but then brought down the house. She was witty, charming, crazy, and even made me cry a little. When she sang Maybe This Time, which is one of my all time favorite Broadway songs I almost lost it. She sounded just like the soundtrack that I have sang along to over and over again in my car. Here are a couple of pictures from the show.

Here is also a video I tried to take from the show. But becuase we where far away it is of the screen so you can not see very well. :(

Get Back

So, I have not been writing many entries for the past few days because I have rediscovered my Netflix account and have been on a ROCK/MUSICAL thing. Since Sunday I have watched Tommy, Hair, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Headwig and the Angry Inch (I had Monday off from work so a lot of free time). Anyways I recommend them all except for Magical Mystery Tour, watch only if you are a big Beatles fan. If you want a fun Beatles movie then watch A Hard Days Night instead.

Here are video clips of my favorite performances from each movie list above.

Willkommen

DVD of the month: Cabaret
The 1972 film was adapted from the Broadway stage production (1966). The stage production was based on John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera, and the novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. The story focus on the nightlife of 1931 Berlin as the Nazis rise to power. Liza Minnelli stars as young Sally Bowles who works at the Kit Kat Klub as an cabaret performer. Sally falls for a young American writer named Brian Roberts, played by Michael York .

My favorite character is the Emcee, who oversees all the action and is played by Joel Grey. He presides as master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub and throughout the show he serves as a constant metaphor for the state of society in Weimar Germany during that time.

Cabaret was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 1973 and won 8: including Best Director Bob Fosse, Best Actress Liza Minnelli, Best Actor in a Supporting Role Joel Grey, Cinematography, Editing, Music, Art Direction, and Sound. It lost Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay to The Godfather.

Hey Los Angeles!!! Tony and Academy Award-winning legend Liza Minnelli will play two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl THIS WEEK Aug. 28-29 at 8:30 PM both evenings. TICKETS STILL ON SALE!!!
If you can not make it to the Bowl no worries, according to Minnelli's official website her Liza's at the Palace at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas set for Sept. 25-30 will be filmed. No plans on how it will be released just yet. But trust me I will keep you informed!

      Dearly beloved are you listening?

      GUESS WHAT?
I just bought my tickets for Green Day's American Idiot at the Berkeley Rep. I am dragging my brother with me. I am soo excited to see John Gallagher Jr. in person; he will play Johnny (the Jesus of Suburbia). Gallagher is the greatest theatre actor of our time! The guy is only 25 and has won a TONY, has been four hit shows (Rabbit Hole, Spring Awakening, Port Authority, and Farragut North), has played in a number of bands and now will star in world premier of Green Day's American Idiot. A friend just told me that Gallagher has his own twitter page. He has been updating regularly about the show and his adventures in San Fran. Click Here to see.
Watch the Video below to see why I love this actor's work sooo much. The 1st video is from the 2007 Local One Strike on Broadway. Gallagher and his Spring Awakening castmates were out in font of the theatre every night to sing for the audience who would have gone to see their show if the strike was not taking place. It is also my favorite performance of the song "The Bitch of Living". The 2nd video is from one of his concerts. The 3rd is a performace of Still Sixteen with his old band Old Springs Pike who later changed their name to The Spring Standards when he left the band.

John will be joined on stage by his old Spring Awakening cast members Gerard Canonico & Brian Charles Johnson who are amazing! You still have time buy tickets to see American Idiot will play at the Berkeley Rep. from September 4th to October 11th 2009!

      Easy to be proud

Gavin Creel (from Hair) started Broadway Impact to gather people together & stand up for equality.
Made up of mainly Broadway theatre people, they describe themselves as: "We are a community of actors, directors, stage managers, fans, producers — pretty much anyone who has ever seen, been in or worked on a Broadway show — united by the simple belief that anyone who wants to should be able to get married...We are a community of talented, generous and amazing people and what we are able to accomplish together is incredible. Every year we raise millions of dollars for charity. When someone needs our help, we are there organizing and rallying together to raise money and show our support. Now, there is a fight that has come to our stage and it is one that we cannot ignore. This fight needs more than just our money... it needs our action."

I love this organization and I hope that you check out their website:

A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck

So I went to see Julie & Julia at movies last night and LOVED IT! OK, I know what you are thinking, "What does that movie have to do with this blog?" My answer "a lot!" Yes, it is not a musical and is not based off a play (yet), but it is blog turn book turn movie.

First of all this movie is charming, laugh out loud funny, and made me long for NYC. Though I love Julia Child (played by the ever so talented Meryl Streep ) I found myself connecting with Julie Powell (played by Amy Adams). Julie is young woman in NYC about to turn thirty who is lost in life, yet finds it in a BLOG she writes about Julia Child's cookbook. The main thing through out the movie that Julie like I, struggled with was trying to find a balance between work, relationships, friendships, and one's passions in life. Another similarity Julie and I share is that someone close to us gave us the idea for the blog. Julie gets the idea for her blog from her husband (played by the wonderful Chris Messina) who thinks she would have fun doing so and my friend Allyson told me I should write because she thought I would have fun doing so. Julie thinks no one reads her blogs, I also think no one reads my blog.

The turning point of the movie is that Julie's blog becomes more than a thing to do but rather a career opportunity. I aspire to one day work in the theatre industry and I have come to view this blog as a tool in creating opportunities in order to achieve that goal. Julie's dedication to her blog was inspiring and I too vow to try to make this the best blog that I can! Anyways, enough about me...go see this movie, I promise I did not spoil it for you. Here is the Trailer just in case i did not convince you to go see this movie!!!

In case that was not enough here are three ways the Movie is connected to Theatre/Musicals:
      1) Amy Adams and Meryl Streep both started in both DOUBT based off the play by the same name. Stanley Tucci (who plays Mr. Child) made his Broadway debut in The Queen and the Rebels
      2) Adams and Streep were also in movie musicals: Adams in Enchanted and Streep in Mamma Mia
      3) A certain song from Guys and Dolls was featured in the movie ( title of entry hint hint)
*Photo above from MSNBC article featuring the real Julie Powell (truly an inspiration)

      If I were a Bell

I loved Guys and Dolls in concert at the Hollywood Bowl! It captured the spirit of the beloved movie which stared Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit and Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson. The Bowl's cast played off each other and captivated the audience with every note they sang. I just want to give shout out to some of the the amazing cast members: Brian Stokes Mitchell (Sky Masterson), Jessica Biel (Sarah Brown) Scott Bakula (Nathan Detroit), Ellen Greene (Miss Adelaide) Ken Page (Nicely-Nicely), Ruth Williamson (Gen. Mathilde Cartwright), Herschel Sparber (Big Jule), Jason Graae (Benny Southstreet), Danny Stiles (Rusty Charlie), and Bill Lewis (Harry the Horse). I also must say that Brian Stokes Mitchell won over my heart with his performance of Sky Masterson. His delivery of sky's famous one liners was spot on.
I can not wait to see what the Bowl puts on next year. I vote Company or a salute to Stephen Sondheim since it is his 80th birthday year. Below are a few photos I took from Friday Night's Show! FOR MORE PHOTO'S CLICK HERE TO SEE PLAYBILL.COM'S PHOTO ALBUM.
